The Invisalign system is ideal for straightening many teeth. The modern, easy-to-use system involves a series of custom-made aligner trays crafted from smooth, comfortable, and nearly invisible plastic. The aligners, which you change out every one or two weeks, will gradually, gently shift teeth into place using gentle pressure until treatment is complete. The result: unlike traditional metal braces, you’ll get a beautiful new smile with very little to interfere with your daily life. In fact, many people won’t even know you’re straightening your teeth.
Invisalign is great for fixing crooked teeth, overbites, underbites, closing small gaps in teeth or straightening crowded, overlapping teeth. It can fix a crossbite, too.
But, although Invisalign can fix many dental issues, there are some limitations.
What Can’t Invisalign Correct?
While Invisalign can correct many dental conditions, some require a different form of treatment, such as traditional braces. These conditions include:
Severe Overbite
While many overbites can be taken care of with Invisalign, extremely severe overbite can require traditional metal braces to resolve.
Shape of Your Tooth
Invisalign can’t work properly if teeth are either too-short or pegged.
Extreme Tooth Position
If teeth are extremely rotated, Invisalign will not effectively shift them into alignment.
Large Tooth Gaps
Although Invisalign works extremely well with small gaps, large dental gaps can require metal braces.
Intrusion and extrusion - Teeth Too High or Low
Invisalign can’t raise or lower teeth position in the jawline; the system also can’t correct a midline discrepancy in teeth of more than 2mm.
Some Previous Dental Work
If you have bridges or some other types of previously performed dental work, Invisalign may not be right for you.
Age Limitations
While there are no age limitations per se, all baby teeth have to be fully emerged or extracted. And patients must be willing and able to wear the aligners for 22 hours a day, or Invisalign won’t work.
Cavities and periodontal problems
Teeth and gums should be in good health before beginning Invisalign treatment.
Why Choose Invisalign?
Your dentist can advise you as to whether any conditions you may have could make Invisalign less effective. But when you can choose Invisalign treatment over standard metal braces, there are so many reasons to recommend using the clear and comfortable aligners. Simple to wear, painless, and attractive, discrete Invisalign treatment is ideal for most patients of any age.
Patients see excellent results without discomfort, and without any of the self-consciousness that can occur from wearing metal braces.
And, cleaning aligners is simple, as is your regular oral hygiene routine when wearing them: just brush and floss twice daily, schedule regular cleanings and routine follow-up appointments with your dental team, and brush your aligner with a toothbrush when you brush your teeth. That’s all!
